Do you become apprehensive or anxious about visiting the dentist? Is your dental phobia or fear of dental treatment keeping you from getting the care you need? Sedation dentistry offers the ability to make patients more relaxed during dental procedures.

Oral Conscious Sedation in Dentistry

Auburn dentist Dr. Thomas Lucas is credentialed to provide oral conscious sedation services for his dental patients. Oral conscious sedation has a mild sedative effect; the patient can walk, talk and respond to instructions, but they are in a fully relaxed state. An amnesic effect is common, many patients report remembering that they went to the dentist, but not much about the procedures.

If Dr. Lucas recommends oral conscious sedation to assist you with your dental needs, we will schedule an extended appointment in our office for your treatment. Dr. Lucas will prescribe oral sedatives to be taken in our office just prior to your visit. The medication will make you very drowsy, so a friend or family member should escort you to your appointment and plan stay with you until the effects wear off.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Our office is also equipped with nitrous oxide sedation or "laughing gas". Nitrous oxide sedation has been used in dentistry for many years. The patient breathes a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide through a small nose mask during treatment to make them feel more relaxed. The effects of nitrous oxide are temporary; it can be a helpful approach to help patients ease their nervousness during dental procedures.

We know that fear of the dentist is real for many people. If you have avoided dental treatment because you are afraid of dental treatment, you may be a candidate for sedation dentistry. Our dentist and team members have helped many patients overcome their fears of dentistry. We begin with a friendly conversation to learn more about you and your previous dental experiences.
